How to check that you have reached the right lawyer

A recommendation is a good start, but it is worth checking who you are dealing with. With me that takes a few minutes:

  • Register of the Czech Bar Association (vyhledavac.cak.cz): enter the surname Surmanová or the registration number 13930. You will see the status of the entry and the office address.
  • Company number 72524243: the same number identifies me in the Czech business register ARES, with the same address in Znojmo.
  • Data box mgd65fi: this official Czech electronic mailbox belongs to my office and is the right channel for documents you want to send officially.

The official contact details of the office are the phone number +420 776 253 056 (the same number works for WhatsApp), the e-mail address ak@surman.cz and the data box mgd65fi. I usually reply by the next working day; if it is urgent, please ring.

What people come to me with

Most of the time it is one of these situations:

  • you are buying, selling or gifting a property and want the purchase price held in escrow and the entry in the land register done properly,
  • you are dividing property after a divorce or between generations in the family,
  • you run a business and need contracts you understand, or a customer is not paying your invoices,
  • you are dealing with an inheritance, often with assets or heirs in Austria,
  • you are from Austria and need legal help in the Czech Republic in German.

What to prepare before you get in touch

Your first message can be a few sentences. So that the initial consultation can give you concrete answers, have the following to hand:

  • Property or other assets: the land register extract (list vlastnictví) or the address, the existing contract, details of the mortgage and the co-owners.
  • Inheritance: the death certificate, letters from the notary, an overview of the estate and the heirs; for assets in Austria the Austrian documents too (German is fine).
  • A contract or an unpaid invoice: the contract, invoices, orders and your correspondence with the other side so far.

Sensitive documents are best sent through the data box, or brought in person; e-mail and WhatsApp are fine for everyday communication. How I handle your data is described in the privacy policy on aksurman.cz.

Where we meet and in which language

My office is in Rooseveltova street in Znojmo, a short drive from the Znojmo area and from Brno, and from the Austrian side from Retz, Hollabrunn or Vienna via the Hatě or Hnanice border crossings. A great deal can also be settled remotely, by video call, e-mail and data box.

I work in Czech, German and English, so you will not need an interpreter. For clients who live abroad, I handle matters governed by Czech law.

Looking for a Czech attorney in Znojmo who works in English? Call or write to me in English: +420 776 253 056, ak@surman.cz. I am an attorney-at-law admitted in the Czech Republic (Czech Bar Association No. 13930); I am not admitted in Austria, Germany or the United Kingdom, and I advise on Czech law. Certified German translations of documents are prepared by a sworn translator I work with, who is appointed by a Czech court.

Frequently asked

What clients usually ask

Surmanová, Surman, aksurman.cz: is this all one office?

Yes. I am entered in the register of the Czech Bar Association as Mgr. Barbora Surmanová; the form Surman appears in the e-mail ak@surman.cz and in the name of the main website aksurman.cz. surmanova.cz is a short address based on my surname that points you to the main site.

Are you a sole practitioner or a larger firm?

A sole practitioner. Your matter stays in my hands personally, from the first phone call until it is closed.

Do you also work for clients outside Znojmo?

Yes. I work for clients from South Moravia, from Austria and for Czechs living abroad. A great deal can be handled remotely; often we meet in person only for signatures. If a court hearing or an appointment with a notary is needed, I will tell you in advance.

May I write to you in German or in English?

Yes, in German and in English. Certified translations of documents are arranged through a sworn translator of German with whom I work.

What does the first contact cost?

A phone call or an e-mail in which you describe your situation costs you nothing and commits you to nothing. The initial consultation is charged at an hourly rate, which I tell you in advance; if we go on working together, I credit it against the fee for the service.

Tell me what you are dealing with

Write a few lines through the form on the main site or simply call. I reply by the next working day.
